“This would look FAB on you!” Kerry said excitedly as she held out a shockingly pink top that seemed short even for Sam.

“Oh, totally.” Roxy agreed.

“R-Really?” Sam stuttered.

“Oh yeah, you’ll be fighting the boys off!” Jane said.

Sam wasn’t so sure she wanted to be fighting the boys off not that she was under much illusion of how boys barely thought about her at all. She looked at the top again, it was very risqué and even the smallest size was a bit too big for her, she’d have to adjust it to make it truly fit. In the shopping cart were more clothes that seemed designed to annoy Isabelle, she was sure her caretaker would never approve of any of it. Though that just made it all the more enticing.

“I can’t afford all of this.” Sam said

“Oh, don’t worry about that.” Roxy chuckled as she held up a small plastic card, “I’ve got my dad’s credit card.”

“Does he… know you have it?” Sam asked slowly.

“It’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission.” Roxy giggled.

“Roxy just batters her eyelids and her dad rolls over.” Kerry teased, “She’s daddy’s little girl for sure!”

Everyone laughed and Roxy took the pink top and dropped it into the cart. Sam didn’t think Isabelle would be at all happy about what she was bringing home but as her friends rolled the cart away she didn’t think she could stop them now. She hurried to catch up and held on to the side of the cart. She didn’t even realise her childlike behaviour was being noticed by the taller girls who looked down at her with raised eyebrows.

Roxy paid for the new clothes and they left the store laden down with purchases. Sam wondered how her friend could possibly spend so much of her dad’s money without getting in trouble. If she had stolen Isabelle’s credit card and spent so much she was sure she would be regressed right down to a baby and left there forever.

“Where to next?” Jane asked as they left the store.

“We’re not done?” Sam asked nervously.

“Girl, you need more than a change of wardrobe.” Roxy smiled down at Sam, “I know just the thing. Come on.”

Without a look backwards the others started striding through the shopping centre. Sam didn’t want to get lost in the crowd and hurried to keep up. Across the large atrium Sam was led into a hairdressers.

“Guys…” Sam said warily.

“Hey, have you got space for an appointment now?” Roxy asked the lady behind the desk at the door.

“Of course, is it for one of you?” The lady asked.

“It’s for Sam.” Jane gave Sam a little prod in the back and the small woman stumbled forwards.

“Not a problem, follow me please.” The lady said with a big smile.

It was all happening so fast. Sam was whisked forwards and before she really knew what was happening she was being helped up into one of the salon’s chairs, they had helpfully put a booster seat usually reserved for children down. A sheet whipped around her and was tucked in at her neck as she looked at herself surrounded by bigger girls in the mirror.

“Right, what are we doing?” The woman asked.

“I don’t…” Sam started sheepishly.

“Could you do this?” Jane asked as she pointed to a picture in a magazine she had picked up from the waiting area. Sam couldn’t see what she was pointing at.

“Are you sure?” The woman asked.

“Yeah, that’ll look really cool.” Kerry nodded her head, “You want to look cool, don’t you?”

Sam felt the increasingly familiar presence of peer pressure. As she looked at the people surrounding her in the mirror they all seemed so excited. She didn’t think they would steer her down the wrong path so she belatedly nodded her head.

“Great!” The hairdresser said cheerily, “Right then.”

Sam sat still has her hair was cut. She could only rarely catch sight of herself in the mirror but was shocked at the changes. Her hair had been long, going halfway down her back and brown, but from the amount falling down the sheet that covered her she could tell it wasn’t going to be super long for much longer. She felt anxious but completely trapped in the situation. She wanted to speak up but couldn’t. She felt like she was in the middle of a ride and couldn’t get off until it was finished.

“And…” The hairdresser made a couple of last trims, “Done! What do you think?”

The hairdresser moved out of the way and Sam could fully see her new cut for the first time. Her eyes widened and her mouth dropped. Her previously long hair had been butchered. It was now just shoulder length and styled so that it fell across half her face whilst the other half of her hair was cut very short. It wasn’t an entirely unpleasant haircut but it was nothing like the “good girl” long hair she had before. What she had now looked so much more… punk?

“That looks fab!” Roxy said as she appeared behind Sam.

“Hell yeah!” Kerry added with an approving nod.

“You… You really think so?” Sam asked as she looked into the mirror again.

“You are just the finishing touch away from look fantastic.” Jane said.

“Finishing touch? We’re not done?” Sam asked nervously.

“One more stop to go.” Roxy rubbed the top of Sam’s head.

As Roxy and the others went to pay Sam dropped off the seat and looked into a nearby mirror. Her hand went up to her hair, it felt so weird being having it this short and she kept trying to sweep it out of her face but it would just fall back down. She was surprised how little it affected her vision as it curled away around eye level. It just felt so… short. After feeling her hair against her back for so long it felt very strange to no longer have it there.

Isabelle had always liked styling Sam’s hairs into pigtails, braids or however else she fancied. Sam felt a jolt of annoyance, her hair was always styled how Isabelle wanted it, Sam had always just accepted it. Sam was sure she wouldn’t approve of this change. She felt panicky, like she had made a horrible mistake that she was going to be punished for. She had the mad idea of collecting all the hair that had been cut away to try and re-attach it to her head, it didn’t matter that she knew it was impossible.

Sam’s hand was taken by Roxy and she was led from the store. She spent the whole time looking back over her shoulder as her hair was swept away by a large broom. She didn’t turn back around until Roxy let go of her. She felt very strange as she negotiated the jungle of legs that was the other shoppers, her new hair kept falling over her face and she had to sweep it away again, she wasn’t sure she would ever get used to it.

“We need to go just over here.” Roxy said.

Sam followed the other girls until they came to a stop in front of a cheap looking jewellery and accessory store. She wasn’t sure what the plan was now but followed the others inside where there was pop-punk playing over the speakers drowning out the music playing in the rest of the mall. Sam looked around at the various things and wondered what she was being taken here for.

Roxy led the way towards the back of the store. It seemed she knew a few of the people who worked there, they all had a similar style of punk-style clothes, dark make-up and lots of… Sam looked in front of her and realised exactly what was going on.

“No… No, no, no…” Sam backed away a couple of steps before bumping into Jane’s legs.

At the back of the store was a second counter but rather than selling the things in the rest of the store it seemed to be devoted to piercings. On the board behind the young woman at the desk was a list of different piercings and the prices associated, underneath the glass case the worker was leaning on was a whole load of studs and rings.

“Sam, don’t be such a baby.” Kerry said as she rolled her eyes.

“I’m… I’m not…” Sam stuttered.

“We’ve all got piercings.” Jane said, “It’s no big deal.”

“I just…” Sam felt extremely anxious.

It wasn’t just that Sam was concerned about the actual piercing. In fact, far more than the piercing she was worried about Isabelle’s reaction. The clothes were one thing, the haircut was going to be difficult to explain but a piercing felt even more extreme.

“Sam, listen to me.” Roxy said as she knelt down to the same level as Sam again, “I know you’re close to your mom, I think that’s… cool. But you’re your own woman! You aren’t a kid anymore. It’s time to grow up.”

Roxy had a way of convincing Sam every time she wavered. Sam thought back to all the times Isabelle had annoyed her by telling her exactly what to do. Even now when she was supposed to be a high schooler she still made almost no decisions of her own. Up until that day her clothes hadn’t been her own choices, her hair hadn’t been her choices and she hadn’t even gotten to decide when to move up to high school. Heck, even her underwear wasn’t her choice. She was still treated like a baby even though she was supposed to be nearly finished with her treatment!

“So what’s it going to be?” Roxy asked softly, “Did you want to run home to mommy or do you want to hang out with us?”

Sam had already made her mind up. She took a deep steadying breath and then looked up at Roxy with a nervous smile. All eyes were on her.

“Just my ears.” Sam said.

“Atta girl.” Roxy replied with her trademark Cheshire cat grin.

Roxy then did something Sam wasn’t at all prepared for. She leaned forwards and hugged her. Sam was quite startled, she hadn’t experienced many hugs recently even when she really needed them. She felt a rush of warmth and emotion towards her new best friend, the young woman who had taken Sam under her wing.

“Alright, if you just come through here.” The girl behind the counter said as she stepped to the side and held open a curtain that led to the rooms behind the shop.

“Good luck.” Kerry said as Sam started walking past.

“You’re not…” Sam paused and stopped talking. She was about to ask if her friends were going to come support her but she had to get out of that mind set. She had to be strong and independent!

Sam followed this young member of staff through to a small room with a chair that reminded her of the dentist’s office. She was directed to sit down and she did so, her legs were feeling a little like jelly anyway. As she sat she felt the pull-up underneath her get squeezed against the chair. There was definitely some moisture in it.

“OK, Sam, my name is Kat. Have you ever had a piercing before?” Kat asked.

Sam shook her head silently. She was starting to feel sick with nerves and was worried that if she opened her mouth she might throw up. Next to her Kat was bringing out a tray of tools that scared her even more, she quickly looked pointedly away.

“That’s OK.” Kat said, “You’ll feel a quick pain but after it’s done you’ll wonder what all the fuss was about.”

Sam was practically trembling as an alcohol wipe came up to each ear and cleaned it off. This was really going to happen. She closed her eyes as the contraption moved up to the side of her head. She was unable to stop a whine from escaping her as she felt it pressing against her earlobe.

“You’ll feel a bit of a pinch but it will all over quickly.” Kat said, “I’ll countdown and then do it on zero, OK?”

Sam nodded her head very slightly as she braced herself for what was to come. Her instinct was telling her to run and hide, she wished Roxy had come into the room to hold her hand or something. She tightly shut her eyes and gripped the chair so hard her nails were digging into it.

“Five… Four… Three…” Kat counted down.

Suddenly there was pressure against Sam’s ear and a click as Kat pushed down. In shock Sam felt her pull-up suddenly warming underneath her as she yelped in surprise. As quickly as the pressure arrived it disappeared leaving Sam’s eyes wide open and her breathing heavily.

“You said you were counting to zero!” Sam exclaimed as her hand went towards her ear.

“I find that making it a surprise helps people who are nervous.” Kat said with a shrug. She stopped Sam’s hand going up to her ear, “Don’t play with it.

As Kat manoeuvred around to her other side Sam tried to subtly squirm in her seat. She prayed she hadn’t leaked, that would be something that would be impossible to explain to her friends or any of the hundreds of people she would walk past on the way back to Roxy’s car. Thankfully her potty training had seemingly progressed to a point where her bladder muscles had quickly clamped down and stopped the flow. Her pull-up was wet but disaster had been avoided.

“Unfortunately the surprise tactic only works once.” Kat said as she prepared the next piercing.

This time Sam had a little more idea of what to expect as she felt the pinch against her ear. She tensed up and then with no countdown at all Kat pressed the handles together and with another click the second ear was adorned with new jewellery. Sam had jumped but this time kept control of her bladder.

“There we go, all done. I’ll give you some disinfectant wipes to keep the areas clean and you’ll have to keep those studs in for a few weeks before you can switch them.” Kat said as she put the equipment away.

“OK…” Sam said she was still feeling very unsure about it.

Sam slipped out of the chair and felt her pull-up hang low between her legs. She gulped but a quick check whilst Kat wasn’t looking confirmed she hadn’t leaked either on her clothes or on the chair. Her ears throbbed slightly as she walked over to the nearby mirror. She hardly recognised herself now. With her shortened hair and sparkling piercings in her ear she felt like a completely different person.

Sam walked back into the main store to see her friends hanging around and waiting. Roxy was the first to see Sam and she covered her mouth as she looked down.

“Oh. My. God!” Roxy exclaimed, “You look great!”

“Definitely.” Kerry agreed, “That look really suits you.”

“I’m jealous I don’t look so good!” Jane added.

Sam smiled shyly. These girls were doing such a good job of making her feel accepted. They may not have been the people she would’ve chosen to hang out with had she got to handpick friends but she wasn’t upset by them so far. She looked down at the floor bashfully as the girls continued to make positive comments on her new look.

After some more compliments and Roxy paying with the credit card the girls left the store. Sam wasn’t sure if there could be anything left to do. It had been a long day and she hadn’t expected to be out as long as she had. There was no doubt in her mind that Isabelle would be worrying about her. A part of her was glad she was making Isabelle wait. After being made to lose her middle school friends and everything else she had been through she felt Isabelle deserved to feel some level of discomfort. That said, she was starting to feel anxious and tired out from the long day.

“Alright, let’s get some dinner.” Roxy said.

“Maybe we should go home?” Sam suggested.

“We will.” Roxy nodded, “Right after we eat.”
