Tales
from the ARVInn--The Rescuer
For those affected by the AR Virus, there are also those who end up outside the main channels, who are the lost and disadvantaged in society. These individuals ended up in this situation from many causes. Some suffered from mental illnesses, while others were simply abandoned and rejected by their families and friends in the early confusion and never sought out a better way of living. Others were already among the homeless and rejected and went back to it when released from medical care. Some were poorly cared for and suffered the mental regression effect to some degree. There were also those who were already criminals and saw no reason to change their mode of living.
Ronald Emmers was a social worker in St. Louis, MO, when the virus first appeared there. He had been involved with young people, trying to help abandoned and neglected children, runaways and others, for the past six years. He knew of the problems they had and the prevalence of drugs and alcohol in their lives. When victims of the virus began to appear in these groups, they often were often trying to pass as young people in order to hide something in their past or to gain protection they lacked otherwise. Ron, as he got to know them, began to help them find more appropriate ways to cope, as they were actually adults.
